The U.S. Postal Service is requiring mailers to change from the POSTNET barcode to the Intelligent Mail® barcode by May 2009 in order to receive the full discounts for presorted mail. For large mailers, the lost discounts can amount to tens of thousands of dollars per month.

You can reprogram applications to comply with Intelligent Mail® barcode requirements, but this approach is extremely time consuming and expensive.
